The (Triangle) Pear Body Shape is one of the most common figures among women. Women with a pear body shape have hips that are noticeably larger than their bust and a nicely defined waist.
Typical characteristics of a Pear Body Shape
- Your hips are larger than your bust
- You have a nicely defined waist
- Your arms and shoulders appear proportionately slimmer
- Weight gains first appear in your bottom, thighs and hips, followed by your tummy and upper body
- You may have short legs and a long torso, or a balanced vertical body shape
Your goal is to elongate and balance your figure by highlighting the smallest part of your waist and drawing the eye upwards to your top half. Your waist is your best asset so emphasise it by adding volume (or the illusion of volume) to your upper body and create the appearance of an hourglass shape.
Triangle figures can look good in tops with extra detail, fabric or weighting in the shoulder area as this makes the top half of the body appear wider. Shoulder pads can broaden the shoulders but don’t go overboard as it may end up giving a bulky result. Women with this shape should keep the bottom portion of the body in clean lines and plain dark colours. Have a focal point or accessories on the upper body close to the face. This will draw attention away from the lower part of the body and create a more balanced look.
Avoid clothes that add to your hips making them appear bulky. Stay away from garments with lots of details or patterns around the hip and thigh area. Don’t wear shapeless tops or stiff fabric, skinny jeans or pants, pencil skirts and baggy garments.
You could always look for style ideas from celebrities that share your pear body shape: Shakira, Beyoncé, Rihanna, Jennifer Lopez.
